June 27, 2007 – The Alaskan Highway – Day 1

We are on our way to Alaska on the famous ALCAN Highway. From Dawson Creek to Fort St. John, we passed some little communities, many farms and houses. After Fort St. John, wilderness – miles and miles of beautiful wilderness. (I don’t have many pictures due to the rain.)

The road is in fairly good shape – a few rough patches, a few gravel patches, and a little construction. We were told that past Destruction Bay in the Yukon, the road is very rough. The book – The Milepost – has been fairly accurate in its descriptions of the road and available services. We highly recommend this for anyone going this way.

We camped at the Prophet River Wayside Provincial Park and had a visitor come thru the camp several times.

The park is small, no amenities, lots of mosquitoes, but beautiful. We met and chatted with quite a few people going to Alaska or coming back from Alaska. And best of all, free firewood – so we had a roaring fire tonight (mainly to keep out the mosquitoes).

And can you believe it is still light at 11:30 PM????
