July 7, 2007 – The Alaskan Highway – Day 11 – TOK

We have made it!!!

The last 15 miles of road to the border were worse than yesterday. Lots of bad frost heaves and then some dirt and then some gravel. Actually the dirt or gravel was a much smoother road.

We decided to camp at the Sourdough Campground in Tok. We made a stop at the visitor center to get more information on Alaska and the roads plus a few stops around town.

Now let me tell you about the Campground. Ken and Ann, the new owners since 2004 are just incredible. This evening from 6:30 to 7:30, they had Floyd and Jeanne Seigler singing and playing the guitar and mandolin – folk, country, and gospel songs – they were great. At 7:30, Ken joined Floyd on the guitar and entertained us with his tunes and “Redneck Comedy.” – What a hoot!

And the best part followed – the famous Sourdough “Pancake Toss.” We tried our luck at it and Andy was one of the winners for a free breakfast. And he will also have his picture on the Sourdough Wall of Fame.

Here are the winners:

So if you are up this way – this campground is a must stay. Come early or make reservations because he fills up by 11:30 AM. And look for Andy’s picture on the Wall of Fame for 07/07/07 (Notice the background pictures in the pictures above – that is the Wall of Fame). We are told that it should also be on their website by the end of summer.

It started raining again so we decided to stay here for 2 days (more rain tomorrow). We are heading to Chicken, Alaska next.
