July 3, 2007 – The Alaskan Highway – Day 7 – The Sign Post Forest

We FINALLY saw the sun today – YEA!!. It was a little cloudy this morning but the sun came out by mid afternoon (and we were able to dry out everything).

Watson Lake is only a few miles from the southern border - picture to follow.

This town is famous for the Sign Post Forest. It is incredible. The forest was started in 1942 by a homesick U.S. Army G.I., Carl K. Lindley of Danville, IL. While working on the Alaska Highway, he erected a sign here pointing the way and stating the mileage to his hometown. Others followed his lead and are still doing so to this day. (No, we did not put a sign up.) Today there are over 60,000 signs in this forest. We know there is a Pottsville sign here put up by John (K3SLJ - SK) and Ann Smetona but we could not find it.

We also went to the Northern Lights Centre for their exhibits on Canadian Space Exploration and a movie on the Yukon and the Northern Lights seen here. (Hopefully we will see some on our way home.) We did find out that the lights are almost always there but because of the lack of total darkness, they cannot be seen.

The rest of the day was spent drying everything out. I am in a small grocery store at the campground now on Wi-Fi – it is very slow. So between yesterday and today, I have uploaded from 6-27 to 7-2. I have pictures for today but they would not upload so I will include them in a future blog post. If you have sent any emails, I hope to answer on the road and you will hear from me at the next free Wi-Fi area.

Tomorrow we are off to Whitehorse, Yukon and hopefully the sun stays with us…
