September 22, 2010 – Day of Rest and Small World

We did just what we said we were going to do today – not much.   It was nice just to hang out and putter – LOL!!!

I did go thru the maps and campgrounds to figure out where (or what areas) we will be staying over the next week.  We need to be in Albuquerque, NM next Wednesday so I did make reservations at a campground near there for Sunday thru Wednesday morning.    So between now and then, we will be doing some traveling.

By late afternoon, we decided to take a little ride and ended up at the Legion in Topeka – very nice post.  The bartender, Vicky, moved into this area a few months ago from Niland, CA (the small town next to the Slabs) and use to bartend and cook at the legion in Bombay Beach.  She couldn’t believe meeting someone who knew where those places were.  You know, the more we travel, the more we realize how small this country really is…

Tomorrow we head west so stay tuned.

September 21, 2010 – Truckhenge, Boathenge, Fire Hydrants, and Mystery Dress Up

Another wonderful day.  Our first stop today was Truck Henge.  We got the directions from Roadside Attractions but as we approached the gate, there was a sign telling us to go to the house about a block away.   Well, we met Linda Lessman who greeted us and took us for a tour.   Her husband Ron has done a lot of the work.  As we walked along, she told us the history of the farm/property and how this all began….

Since my memory is short, here are links to web pages that will tell you more:

The stone in front of the bus above is called the Truth stone.  Many of the local high school kids come her to get their picture taken in front of the stone.  Ron is also starting to collect Christmas Lights to make the largest ball of Christmas lights (so folks, send them his way!)

Linda and I:

This is “Bottle City”.  The pictures don’t do it justice.  With the sun shining on the bottles, it almost looks like they are all lit up – really neat!!!

And then we went to Boat Henge:

There was some neat sculptures throughout:

We met Ron as we got back to the house and he told us so many things he is doing around the property.  This is a railroad car that they use to use to carry race horses.  There are only 3 in existence:

This is the original homestead that was built in the 1800’s but has been flooded a number of times:

So this is the new house:

Ron and Linda invited us in to show us what they have been doing with the house – all I can say is WOW!!

Here is the back of the house – check out that stairway and all the plants:

The bottom area of the house is the garage – you can imagine how Andy’s face lit up when he saw the size of it and the tools.  It also serves a double purpose since this is a flood plain area – their living quarters are well above the ground and flood area.

Some of Ron’s paintings:

These are made in the doors of the lower level (bottles and concrete).  Linda told me that at night when lit from inside, it looks like faces.  Sooo…….

the next two pictures were taken without flash from the inside with the sun shining thru:

From there Linda and I rode the elevator to the top floor (Andy and Ron took the stairs).  The elevator is a fork truck lift:

From the elevator, we walked into this wonderful open area – WOW!!!   Incredible!!!    I loved the open area.  The bedrooms and bath are off of this room.  Ron showed us the bath – another WOW!   The flooring throughout is made from old pallet boards that Ron has planed and polyurethane.   The designs are beautiful.   All the workmanship throughout is top notch!!!

We had a great time talking with them.  I know I could have stayed all day and just listened to all the stories…   So folks if you are in this area, stop by and see them.  What a great couple.

Ron and Linda, thank you so much for sharing your story and your home with us.

We left there and went further into Topeka and stopped at the fire hydrant garden.

This is from the Roadside America website:

“Claude Belshe started to collect and install old fire hydrants when the garden he and his wife planted was trampled by their two dogs. The hydrants have become heaven for the dogs! They have all been lovingly repainted by his stepson Jeffery. Claude plans for the garden to continue to grow and is always on the lookout for more hydrants. The entire garden can be seen from the street as his dogs are very aggressive to protect their paradise!”

No one was home when we stopped by so we did not see the dogs.  But the hydrants are really colorful and cute.

Our next stop was the Mt. Hope Cemetery where we found the grave of 5 year old (1880-85) Carrie Frances Kiene.  About 4-5 times a year, this child statue is dressed in appropriate clothes for the season by someone unknown and unseen.  Apparently it has been happening for over 20 years.  Her clothes now are the green shawl/sundress, sunhat with feather, small purse and even a doll with pink hair.   Isn’t this something!

We noticed that Carrie had a number of brothers and sisters that did not live long – how sad.  Life must have been very hard in this area over 100 years ago….

After lunch and a stop at Wal-Mart, we headed back to the motor home where we met some of the park residents – :-)):

What a wonderful day!

Tomorrow is a rest day for us – I hope – LOL!!!

September 19-20, 2010 – Perry Lake and Stuff

We have had two beautiful (but HOT!) days here at Perry Lake:

09-19-10 Perry Lake 002

09-19-10 Perry Lake 003

The campground really cleared out on Sunday and there are only a few of us here.  Our site:

The past two days we were busy (cleaning in and out, laundry, groceries, rearranging, getting caught up with emails, blog, phone calls, etc. etc..)…  Hmmm I thought we were going to rest – LOL!!!

We did check out the motor home and car for any damage from the hail.  It looks like the MH is good and only a few dings on the car.  WoW!!

And we have enjoyed our evening campfires – :-))).

September 18, 2010 – Hail and Rainbows

We continued on our journey west.

We passed power plants:

More harvesting:

The land started to change to more greenery and rolling hills as we got closer to the Mississippi:

09-18-10 A Travel thru Illinois 007

How about those clouds!  We were able to get thru the storms in Illinois and Missouri:

09-18-10 A Travel thru Illinois 010

The mighty Mississippi:

09-18-10 A Travel thru Illinois 014

In 1997 we were in this area touring (by car) Hannibal, MO – of Mark Twain fame – and areas along the Mississippi.  We had pulled into a rest area that overlooked the river and met a couple in their motorhome who had stopped for lunch.  They told us of their lifestyle and we were hooked.  We were both working at the time and never dreamed that 10 years later we would be living this dream…   Yes, I count my blessings daily..

We continued across Missouri:

09-18-10 B Travel thru Missouri 030

09-18-10 B Travel thru Missouri 032

09-18-10 B Travel thru Missouri 020

Found another nice little park for lunch:

And the rolling hills continued:

We were going to stop at a State Park south of St. Joseph, MO but when we got there, there was no information on fees, nor could we find the camp host so we moved on across the Missouri River:

And that is when the clouds REALLY moved in (or rather we drove into them):

And then it started to rain and HAIL!!  Andy pulled us into a farmer’s storage area to wait it out.  I cannot begin to describe the sound in the motorhome – deafening!!!

09-18-10 C Travel in KS Border to Perry 020

After the hail stopped, we had to unhook the car, turn around, then rehook the car back up again.  When we were out, I grabbed a couple of pieces of the ice balls.  Here they are on a glove..

Never saw anything like that in my life and don’t want to again.

We made our way to Perry Lake and the Peninsula Campground of Rock Creek Park (near Topeka, Kansas).  It is an Army Corp. of Engineers campground – water and electric for $8.50/night (with the Golden Age Pass).

We were lucky to get a site (Saturday night) – lots of families here for the weekend.  One of our neighbors had a remote controlled car going up and down the road and our Dusty just found it fascinating – :-))).

At the end of the storm we were treated to a beautiful rainbow:

09-18-10 D Perry Lake 003

I could see the end but not the pot of gold.  But then again, we made it here okay and that is the pot of gold!!

09-18-10 D Perry Lake 005

We have traveled a lot in the past two days and we were so busy for the week before that we are looking forward to a few days of rest and doing some odds and ends around the motorhome.  And of course having this great scenery is a big plus!!
