July 28, 2009 – Travel to Captain Cook

We left Homer this morning in the rain and took a slow drive up SR-1 on the western side of the Kenai Peninsula.  We made a stop at Fred Meyers in Soldotna for fuel and groceries and ran into Peggy and Larry (who we met in Ninilchik).  It was so good to see them and hopefully we will see them again in Arizona this winter.

We continued our journey up the Kenai Spur Road and stopped at the end of the road at the Captain Cook State Park.   If you look at a map, follow the road north of Kenai.  When the road stops, there we are!

I just love this place!!  We are in lush vegetation and sit on a bluff overlooking the Cook Inlet with a view (if it clears) of Mt. Redoubt and Mt. Spur. The rain, however, continued so no pictures – :- ((.   Tomorrow, I promise!

August 8, 2007 – Reset Day

This morning we traveled to Kenai and are staying at the Beluga Whale RV Park. It is a private park and not too bad – the view is also incredible – Kenai Mountains on the one side, the Aleutians on the other, and the Cook Inlet in between.

So today was really reset day – charging the batteries, getting caught up in the world (TV, paper, internet) and just kicking back. If the batteries are charged tomorrow, we are heading to the Russian River and hoping to get a space in the campground (the silver salmon are running!).

If I add more to this day, I will let you know in a future blog.

August 7, 2007 – Another Beautiful Day

Imagine this: Seeing the morning sun shining on snow covered mountains, the tide coming in among huge boulders, sitting on a high bluff surrounded by lots of wildflowers – HEAVEN ON EARTH!

Today we did the nature hike in the park – beautiful. We also walked along the beach right before high tide (we were careful) and then again at low tide.

Some pictures – look at those rocks:

The mudflats are really something. The mud is fluffy (like Cool-Whip) but when we threw rocks in them, they just disappeared – scary…

We also had to do some maintenance on the MH – our water heater had a problem as well as our solar panel – Andy did a great job on fixing both. But our batteries are low (due to doing a lot of boon docking and the panel not working) so tomorrow we need to go to a full hook up park to get charged!!!

And another great campfire night!

August 6, 2007 – Travel to the End of the Road

WIND!!!

Around 2:30 this morning, we awoke to the motor home shaking – MY OH MY!!! The wind was really blowing. (Actually I thought it was an earthquake at first – scary.)

We finally did get some more sleep but it was still very windy when we got up. The skies were clearing and we did start to see the sun.

We traveled today to the northwest corner of the Kenai Peninsula. The route took us along the Cook Inlet with incredible views of the Aleutian Islands with their volcanoes.

We are camped at the end of the road in the Discovery Campground of Captain Cook State Recreation Area. (The road ends and there is the recreation area!)

This is the view from the bluff about 50 feet from the end of our campsite:

We put chairs on the bluff and just watched the water and tides and mountains – life doesn’t get any better than this…

Andy looking for boats (check out the view):

And the best part is the day remained sunny and warm with beautiful blue skies – Oh, my!!! (And another great campfire!)
