November 15, 2021 Travel to Toad Suck Park in Arkansas

We left early this morning and headed southwest, mostly on I-40.

The western part of Tennessee reminds me of PA with the rolling hills:

Past cotton fields – sorry about the picture:

And thru Memphis.  Every time I see this building, I know the Mississippi River is coming up.

This is the bridge that had some structural issues and was shut down for a while.  I cannot imagine the traffic jams on the other roads.

We are officially in the west – Smile

We had a long day and my Andy brought us safely to Toad Suck Park (I just LOVE the name).  It is an Army Corp of Engineer Park on the Arkansas River.  Here is our view and site:

The cities offer some great things but being in nature really sooths the soul.  So we will be here for four nights to relax (and get laundry done – LOL).

Stay tuned and enjoy today.

November 13-14, 2021 Grand Ole Opry and Last Day

Saturday Morning was a relaxing day for us.  Even the kitties enjoyed just hanging out in the sun:

Mid/Late Afternoon, we went for dinner at Cock of the Walk – known for their catfish.

Oh my, this chair in the lobby:

I just had to sit in it.

We had catfish and chicken.  The portions were large and it was pretty good.

And then we headed to the Grand Ole Opry where we had tickets for the 7 PM show.

Our view:

The theme tonight was honoring our veterans and that they did.  The first hour of the show was some of the old time country stars.  I need to apologize here but my pictures were not that great.  I did have some videos but having a problem uploading. So I am going to put links to each of the stars that we saw.

Jeannie Seely  http://www.jeannieseely.com/    At 81 years old, she is still amazing!

Bill Anderson  - I will add links below.  This gentleman started out as a songwriter and then moved to a singer.  He has been in the business for over 60 years and has written songs for many artists.  He was wonderful on stage.

Connie Smith:  An incredible female artist who has been with the Opry for over 50 years.

At this time, the curtains closed and we were told that when they opened we would be live on the radio as well as live on Circle TV,,,

When the curtains opened…

Mark Wills opened with “19 Somethin” and went on to sing a few of his songs.

http://markwills.com/

Next up was Jessie James Decker.  Her dad was in the audience and just retired military.  She sang one of her songs for him.  Very emotional.

John Conlee was next and sang “Jesus take us thru”

http://www.johnconlee.com/site/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Conleehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Conlee

And the star… Billy Ray Cyrus opened with Old Town Road and had the audience on their feet and singing – it was awesome! He continued with “Some gave all.”  Very emotional

The announcer brought Lt. General Keith Huber on stage – 40 years in the service – who thanked Billy Ray for his support of our troops.

Afterwards, Bill Anderson came on stage. He wrote “Old Army Hat” and Billy Ray was the first to record it many years ago.  They both sang the song.  Again emotional.

https://outsider.com/news/country-music/billy-ray-cyrus-honors-those-who-served-oprys-veterans-day-weekend-celebration/

And he finished with… Achy Breaky Heart!

When the curtains closed we were asked to stay.  Jessie James Decker was going to record a Christmas song for the USO.  So we stayed.  Very nice.

It was a wonderful evening and again I apologize for no pictures.  If I can figure out how to do it, I will upload videos..

If you are ever in Nashville, this should be one of your stops – either at the Ryman or here.  It is just amazing!

There are many YouTube videos of Opry Performances – enjoy.

November 14, 2021  Our Last Day

Our last day here!  It has been lots of fun and busy for us.  There is so much to see and do. (Reminds me of NYC – there is never enough time so you have to take it in short bits.)

Some of you who know me, know I LOVE craft fairs.  There were advertising a huge event at the Nashville Fairgrounds so off I went.  It was very nice and lots of wonderful homemade items.  Living in a motorhome severely limits what you can buy – LOL!

So tomorrow we are heading south and west.  Stay tuned and enjoy today!

November 12, 2021 Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage

Today’s adventure took us to Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, the home of the 7th president.

We signed up for the Mansion Tour which gave us an interpreter led tour of the mansion and various audio tours of the grounds.

There was a lot of information about Andrew Jackson and his family but here I am only going to talk about the tours and the property.  If you would like more information on Jackson, it can be found here:  https://thehermitage.com/ – Check under the “Learn” Tab.

We ordered tickets for the 1030 tour.  Once we arrived and checked in, we went past the museum and walked to the mansion.  Our first glimpse:

Impressive, isn’t it! Waiting in line for our tour:

We could not take any pictures inside.  Our docents were wonderful, giving us the history of the house, the rooms and their use, and even some of the events and culture of the day.

Once outside, we were able to take pictures of some of the rooms.  Andrew Jackson was said to be the “People’s President.”  He had an open door policy at the White House and here at his home.  It was said that if you came to visit him, you would get a meal and be able to sleep over (although you may not get a bed).

Here is the dining area:

The kitchen is on the left and the smokehouse on the right.  Both are separate from the house:

The back of the Mansion:

This was originally two separate quarters for slaves and their families.  Eventually it became know as Alfred’s House..

Interesting information on Alfred – he was dedicated to the Jackson family and one of the first tour guides in his later years.

The Spring House:

The original Hermitage.  It was a two story home where they lived for 17 years.  When they moved to the Mansion, the floors were separated and they both became slave quarters.

Information on the Jackson family:

They did not have any biological children but did take children in as their own.

One of the VIP Tours included a ride throughout the property.  (It was sold out – Sad smile)

Beautiful horses:

The property was absolutely beautiful and the weather was the best!

2021-11-12 A Hermitage (56)

In the tree line, there was a family of deer and a large buck!  It was hard to get a good picture cause they were so far away.

The garden area was laid out in four quadrants with pathways thru the middle and along the edges.  Vegetables would have been planted in the quadrants.  In the center and along the edges were the flowers that Mrs. Jackson loved.  On one branch of the pathway, herbs were planted to use for food and medicinally.

One of the pathways:

The Jackson Cemetery was right behind the gardens.

Interesting Tombstone.

The side of the Mansion:

The Hermitage archaeology program began in the late 70’s with several excavations throughout the site.  Researchers have found a collection of about 800,000 artifacts including animal bones, ceramics, work tools, and personal items.  This is one of the digs:

2021-11-12 A Hermitage (117)

From there we went to the museum to see a film on Andrew Jackson and his life.  If you know some of the history of him, he was not very kind to the Native Americans and the slaves.  The movie addressed this.  One quote was we need to acknowledge the history, good and bad, whether we like it or not, so it does not happen again.  Great quote.

We walked thru the museum that contained information on Jackson’s military career and stories of the slaves.

Andy and I both enjoy history and it was a great day for us.

We stopped at Walmart on the way back and lo and behold, they had my favorite wine.  Oak Leaf is Walmart’s answer to Costco’s two buck Chuck.  I haven’t had this since AZ in 2016.  And it was still under $2.00 – how about that!

  2021-11-12 B Nashville (2)

Tomorrow we have tickets for the Grand Ole Opry so stay tuned and enjoy today.
