August 11 – 12, 2009 - Eagle River

Well, we officially left the Kenai Peninsula and are starting to head east.  The fireweed is almost all bloomed and the seeding is starting – Fall is in the air…   :-((((

I have a correction to yesterday’s blog – the picture of the baby moose was actually a baby/juvenile caribou (thanks, Beth).  So here is one of the baby moose:

We arrived in Eagle River Campground – same site as before – :-).  Our first job was to fill up on groceries so we went to Wal-Mart and then to Fred Meyers.   Tough day!

And we had a great campfire evening.

On Wednesday, 13th, the first thing on my agenda was the laundry.  This afternoon we went into Anchorage to try to find a adapter for my computer (no luck).   We talked about spending more time in Anchorage but it is a big city and decided not too.  Our last stop was Safeway and now we are full (I think??).

And another great campfire evening.

July 6-7, 2009 Travel Days

July 6, 2009

We left Seward this morning to the smell of smoke – fires burning on the Kenai Peninsula and the weather was just right for the smoke to be blowing in..

After stopping at the dump -emptying our tanks and filling the fresh water tank, we were on our way.  We pulled in to Eagle River State Campground early afternoon, then went to town to do laundry.  Back at the motor home, we just relaxed and had another great campfire.

This morning we stopped at Wal-Mart for some groceries, then to the Tesoro for gas, dumping, and water and we were on our way.

Our travels today took us to the town of Talkeetna and we will be here at the Talkeetna RV/Boat Launch Campground until at least Sunday.

The campground is kind of rustic but we did get a nice site:

Downtown is only a 5 minute walk which we did after supper and checked out a few places.

This is one of the historic cabins – it is called the Three German Bachelor Cabin and dates back to 1934.  It is believed to have been inhabited by 3 German bachelors who came to America and lived here between mining sessions…

We finished the evening with another wonderful campfire…

Just a note on the weather – it is beautiful but for us – HOT.  Today it hit 85 degrees – oh my!!  And we are not used to that.  It should be real interesting when we decide to spend a summer at home in PA!!

June 28-29, 2009 – Eagle River and Anchorage

On Sunday, 28th, we left Denali National Park in the rain and headed down the road.  After about 30 miles, the rain stopped and the skies cleared so we were able to see the mountain one last time:

And our last look at the Alaskan Range:

We arrived at Eagle River State Campground, set up, went to Wal-Mart, and then made a stop at the Elks – nice lodge and had a wonderful time.  Back at the campground, we enjoyed another campfire for a short time (it was raining off and on – :-().

Monday, 29th, we went into Anchorage to the post office for my package (thanks, Tina) and then we just did a little walkabout downtown.

I had to get a picture with a moose – :-). Isn’t he cute:

We bought reindeer sausage sandwiches from one of the street vendors and listened to some local musicians:

What a nice afternoon.

This is our last night here – we are off to Seward tomorrow.  Our plans are to head back this way and spend some time in the Anchorage area.  And of course stay at this campground.

July 27, 2007 – Travel to Eagle River

The package I was waiting for was not delivered yesterday to Wasilla. I was told it would be in Anchorage today at the UPS terminal at the airport. The campground where we were staying was like a large parking lot and both Andy and I were getting tired of looking at gravel. So, today we moved to Eagle River Campground that is part of the Chugach Mountain Range State Park. It is closer to Anchorage and absolutely beautiful!! (I will say again – I just love the state and national park campgrounds.)

Once we got settled, we went to the terminal and picked up the package. We stopped by Point Woronzof which has a nice view of the Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm. Here is a picture. This area gets large tides – notice the driftwood and rocks on the beach. We even saw a carburetor and pieces of a car on the shore. We started to take a walk toward the water but saw how muddy it was and then realized this was the mud flats. There are warnings all thru this area to stay off of them since they are like quicksand in places. After getting close, I believe it – it is like clay and mucky!

Once I got all the information mailed back, we settled back at camp with a nice supper over the campfire. We finished the evening by a nice walk along the river trail. Eagle River is glacial river – in other words, it is feed by melting glaciers. Some pictures:

Notice the rushing water. Most of the rivers we have seen here are like that. There are many places that have whitewater rafting tours and also many places that have warnings to stay off the river. The water was VERY COLD and for the rafting tours we did see, the people were in wet suits. But we hear the fishing is great!

A word about Anchorage: The city was laid out very nice and there is much to do there but it is a city. Alaska has about 600,000 residents and over half live in the greater Anchorage area. We may stay there some time but not right now.
