More shots from the road:
We are in Whitehorse, Yukon – their major city (probably equal to Pottsville). The wilderness is just outside of town and we did some exploring. This is Wild Canyon and the Yukon River.
Isn’t it incredible! The river is much calmer now since they built the dam in 1959.
This is Whitehorse Dam.
This is the wooden type structure to the left of the dam. This is for the salmon when they are heading upstream (hopefully we will see the salmon run sometime during this trip. It is still too early for them to be here in Whitehorse.)
We are staying at the Pioneer RV Park. The park has 3 sections: one wooded area (that we could not get in); a parking lot with hookups (that we are in) and a parking lot without hookups. I understand that owners need to make as much money in the short season but I can put my arm out the window and touch the next RV. I guess that is why Andy and I like state/provincial and national/forest parks – the sites are usually large and beautiful and you can rarely see the camper next to you. There are also 2 groups of caravans in this park. We have met some of them along the way and they are great but that is probably why it is so crowded.
We did stop in the visitor center to find out the conditions of the ALCAN to Tok, Alaska (400 miles from here). The next 100 miles should be ok but the 200 after that may be rough. So I will let you know how it is.
And this is what Elliot does best. Once we stop, he loves to sit by the front window in the sun, survey where we are and then sleep. We are hoping that he will ride up front but so far that has not happened.
