May 19, 2007 – Carhenge

Today we went to Carhenge (3 miles out of town). Carhenge is made of 38 vintage cars of the 1950’s and 1960’s arranged in dimension and orientation just like Stonehenge in England.

The story goes that Jim Reinders had lived for a time in England, where he visited Stonehenge. He wanted to build a replica back home. At some point, he realized that each of the giant standing stones is about the size of a car.

When Reinders’ father died in 1982, the family gathered at Alliance and he made his proposal: As a tribute to his father, the family should build a Stonehenge replica on the land his father use to farm. The family dedicated the monument on the summer solstice of 1987 – because Carhenge’s northeast axis, like that of the original, is aligned with the sunrise on that day.

Over the past few years, more junk-car sculptures have been added.

It was a lot of fun to walk around these cars and sculptures. And the cars that are half buried are whole cars, not just pieces. In some of them, we were able to look thru the window area and the whole car is there – Incredible!

The rest of the day was MH maintenance and, of course, getting caught up with the blog. For those who are following, I have posted from 5/14-19/07. You may start to see some changes in the blog. I have just signed up for Google AdSense and I am not sure how it works at this time. Since this blog is getting picture heavy, I will be archiving every week. To see previous blogs, see the listing on the right side. Also, for those who want some type of notification on the blog, there is an RSS feed at the bottom of this page. Google has put this on for me but I am still not sure how it works. Feel free to try it out.

Tomorrow we head to South Dakota to the Black Hills area.
