After saying our goodbyes to Bill and Shelly (they are heading east and north), we packed a lunch and headed to the village of Magdalena to find the Kelly Ghost Town.
On the way to the Kelly Mine, we found this abandoned mine:
Well, we had rough directions to the town so when we came to the Y in the road, we went right instead of left. After a few miles, we realized we went the wrong way. So back to the Y and then we went left. After about two miles we saw a cabin and the church and this sign:
The church where they still have services once a year:
Town ruins:
Mine ruins:
Mine tailings:
More mines in the hills above the town site:
View from the mine:
At the top of the mine, I met the owner of the property. He bought the town in 2012 – all except the mine itself. He would love to preserve it but money is an issue so he just keeps an eye on the property to make sure it is not destroyed any further. Camping use to be allowed here but not anymore.
Part of the cemetery:
What an interesting place.
We found a rest stop and had lunch:
Then headed back to Magdalena:
Where we saw these cool figures:
And took our time heading back to Socorro:
In town, we did some shopping and headed back home. We expect to be here a few days – there is a very bad storm headed our way – high wind and dust advisory starting tomorrow and lasting until Tuesday afternoon. So we are staying put!
On a separate note, I belong to a site called Boondockers Welcome that is celebrating its first birthday. Here is the link: http://www.boondockerswelcome.com/ The link is also on the side bar under interesting links.
