We woke this morning to beautiful skies and no wind so off we went – westward. Past the lava flows near Grants:
Over the Continental Divide:
And the scenery changes:
We headed north out of Gallup:
Into Arizona:
Free range horses:
We are now traveling in the Navajo National Forest. It was nice to see trees after so long.
WOW!
Our first sighting of the canyons in this area:
On the plateau – we are at 5000’ feet here – we could see forever:
We pulled into Cottonwood Campground which is right by the Visitor Center for Canyon de Chelly (pronounced de-shay). This is our site:
A view of the campground from the hill – check out all the cottonwood trees:
After we set up, we walked to the visitor center where we watched a video on the canyon and got information on the rim drives and the White House Trail. We then checked out the town of Chinle – cute. Back home, we had a nice little happy hour and then cooked steaks over the grill. It was nice to not have those high winds.
Tomorrow we are doing the rim drive so stay tuned.
Enjoy today.
