We woke to the marine layer again and decided to explore the state park.
View of one of the lookouts near our site:
No, we still did not see the lighthouse so we decided to head a little inland. If you look closely, you will see a rock in the ocean.
This is the historic Hughes Home.
Their view:
Sadly the home was closed to tours at this time.
A little history:
“Patrick and Jane Hughes came to Cape Blanco from Ireland in the 1860’s. They built this house in 1898.
The family cleared great stands of spruce, rooting out the stumps with teams of horses to ready the land for their new life here. The farmstead and the business they built was typical of the 19th century American success.
After 30 years, they raised 7 children and expanded their land base to 2000 acres and managed a successful dairy herd of 100 cows.
Despite having so many children, by the mid 1940s all of the Hughes family had either died or moved away. Only Annie Doyle, wife of the Hughes’ youngest son, Francis, remained, living alone in the house for 13 years before her death in 1959. The house sat abandoned until 1971, when the state of Oregon acquired the property, and was persuaded to renovate the home as part of Cape Blanco State Park.”

The Sixes River Valley below the home:
Farming is still done in the area:
Since we did not see the lighthouse, we made our way to Port Orford. Our first viewpoint – look at those rocks (sea stacks):
A mosaic viewpoint:
From there we went to Battlefield Park where I did get a chance to get to the beach.
Check this one out.
OH MY! OH MY! OH MY!
A little history of this site – so sad!:
My walk on the beach:
This was just past low tide. Notice all the debris/driftwood:
Small cave in that stack:
The tide was starting to come in:
Not sure what these plants are called but they look like snakes:
All I can say is WOW!:WOW!:
WOW!:
It was starting to get a little misty.
We went a little further down the coast to another viewpoint. Isn’t this beautiful!
Yes, I could live here. Between the ocean and the mountains, oh yes!
We headed back and stopped to see the lighthouse. It is actually there.
The fog is coming back:After supper, we decided to come to the lighthouse viewpoint to see the sunset. I know it is there above the fog layer.
It came in really thick and I was able to get a picture of the light from the lighthouse. Not so sure how ships will see this:
The glow on the ocean was beautiful:
We drove back to the Hughes House and this was the sky – WOW!
So hopefully before we leave the coast I will see my sunset.
Tomorrow we continue our sightseeing so stay tuned and enjoy today.
