We left the Discovery Campground (Captain Cook) area this morning and traveled to Kenai where we are parked at the American Legion (Camping for $10.00 with electric). After setting up we went to the visitor center and picked up a brochure on Old Town Kenai – it is a self guided walking tour.
Here is a sampling of some of the buildings. This is the Oskolkot/Dolchok Cabin – “This cabin remains in its original location and is a good representation of what the buildings in early Kenai looked like. One of three homes currently in Old Town that were either built or owned by a Kenaitze Indian, the house is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.”
Not sure on the history of these building:
This is the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church. “Constructed in 1894, this building is one of the oldest standing Orthodox churches in Alaska. A National Historic Landmark, church services are still regularly held.” While we were here, we met the resident priest who took us on a little tour and told us about himself. Before coming to Kenai, he was stationed for 25 years on Kodiak Island – oh my!
This Chandelier originally came from Siberia. They are trying to raise funds to restore it. The priest told us that it did have crystals many, many years ago. They are trying to find a picture of the chandelier with the crystals for restoration purposes.
After Old Town, we walked to the overlook of the Cook Inlet/Kenai River:
Notice all the fisherman – today was the last day of dip netting and yes, the fish were being caught:
On our way back to the MH, we stopped by the campground next to us to see Tom, Deb, and Jonathan (fellow Escapees who we met in Talkeetna). We had a great chat and did meet later in the evening for a steak dinner at the Legion. What a small world this is!
Since it was still early, we decided to take a ride to Kenai Landing. It was once a cannery – now there are shops and a restaurant.
The warehouse/cannery – front and back:
Another one of the older buildings:
And more fisherman on the Kenai
And as you can see – no rain (but it was a little windy).
