And we are off - “North to Alaska” – on the famous “Alcan” Highway.
What a difference for us from two years ago. Then we left in late June when the weather was warmer, the rivers flowing, the leaves on the trees and the only snow was at the higher elevations. (For those who are just following the blog, check June-Sept 2007 for details.)
Spring is just starting here and the trees and grasses have either a green hue or red hue. There is still some snow on the ground and the rivers and lakes still frozen.
The highway itself is “bumpy” – items that are normally secure are falling off (i.e.. things we put on the bed, couch, or dinette for travel end up on the floor – LOL). The road is also “lonely” this time of year – mostly truck traffic. Last time we met so many people at the stops and rest areas, today we did not see one RV (or truck camper, etc.)
I know we are not the first ones since some of the people we talked with in Dawson Creek told us the tourist traffic started about 3 weeks ago. But the lady at the Chamber of Commerce asked us if we were crazy going this time of year – LOL!!!
We saw our first gravel area:
And our first view of the Rockies:
And so many places are still closed so we ended up driving longer than our usual – too much for me! We are camped at a nice rest area about 45 miles north of Fort Nelson (MM 329) and my body is finally relaxing from all the “bumping”!!!
