Our travels today took us on new (to us) roads. Some pictures of the wildflowers along the road:
We continued through the mountains:
And up to the high desert:
We started down to the valley floor and as we rounded a turn, this is what we saw (WOW!! – and yes that is snow on the mountain).
These are the days where I have to pinch myself to make sure I am not dreaming seeing this scenery!! We are so blessed!
We are staying at the Verde Valley Fairgrounds for the next week (they had a great weekly rate for electric/water). After setting up, we met Carolyn and Pete at the train station to make reservations for the train ride on Saturday. Carolyn and Pete are staying down the road from us at Dead Horse Ranch State Park so hopefully we will be getting together over the next few days. After we went our separate ways, Andy and I headed to Jerome.
Jerome was once a billion dollar mining town producing copper, gold, silver and other valuable ores. In 1929 Jerome was the third largest city in Arizona before the closing of the mines in the early 1950s dwindling the town down to about 50 residents.
The town is sitting on the steep slope of Cleopatra Hill on the side of Mingus Mountain and the main road that goes thru the town is narrow and "switch-backed" up the mountain. Here is part of the town:
This is the Jerome Grand Hotel (which is said to be haunted):
And the views from Jerome:
We continued south on Route 89A. This is a two lane road that climbs up and over the mountains on its way to Prescott. We only traveled about 5 miles and then headed back. Later on we may do the entire route thru Prescott.
The scenery was spectacular. This is from one of the scenic views and yes that is the road – LOL:
We stopped at the Cottonwood American Legion (impressive lodge) to check out their events and had a great time. We hope to go to dinner there on Friday.
What a wonderful day. We expect to do a lot of sightseeing here so stay tuned.
