Today we decided to explore some of Historic Route 66 in this area and some roadside attractions. I will spare you the history of Route 66 – there is A LOT of info on the internet as well as books, etc. Many of the little towns along this route had some interesting attractions to get people to stay in their town. Sadly with the interstates that bypass the main streets, many of the towns and attractions have hit hard times. But there are a few.
First in Holbrook:
The Rock Shop Dinosaurs (a roadside attraction):
The rock shop was interesting to go thru – it reminded me a lot of Quartzsite.
The world’s longest map of Route 66:
There are a number of these on Route 66 with a few towns claiming the world’s longest – LOL!
The Wigwam Motel:
Check out the old cars:
It must have been really interesting to stay here – :-)).
We had lunch at Joe and Aggie’s Cafe – the family has had this cafe since the mid 40’s and it is now run by the grandchildren of the original owners. It was a neat place and good food.
We traveled to Joseph City with a stop at Geronimo’s who claims the World’s Largest Petrified Tree:
After seeing some of the trees yesterday in the Petrified Forest, I might disagree.
Our last stop of the day was the Jack Rabbit Trading Post (which is now a Stop and Go – and part trading post – :-)):
Isn’t he cute:
It was an interesting day. Tomorrow we head east towards Amarillo, Texas. We were going to do a couple stops in New Mexico but decided to save sightseeing there for next season.
Stay tuned.
