May 31, 2007 – Montana and Glacier National Park

The Rockies!!

We rounded a corner and there they were!

Everyone should experience seeing the Rockies in a vehicle coming from the east. The land is flat (altitude ~3500’) filled with farms and ranches and in the distance are these hugh snow covered mountains. The first time I saw them I was 19 and the experience is emotional. And it was emotional today (and it is the 4th time I have seen them). I am home!

We went thru Marias Pass to go to the West Entrance of Glacier NP. This pass is the lowest mountain pass between Canada and Mexico and was closely guarded by the Blackfoot Indians until ~ 1889. Many scouts knew about the pass but could not find it. (I won’t go into the complete history but there are some great articles I read on the pass, including how valuable it was to the Indians and then how valuable it became to the railroad.)

Look at the color of that water!

Once we set up in the Apgar Campground, we found out some disappointing news: Part of the Going-to-the Sun Road is closed and may be until the end of July. Last November, they had 10 inches of rain on top of the snow that collapsed part of the road. Then winter set in and they could not get to fix it. Also, they are still plowing the snow at the top to get to the road. On the west side, it is only open for 16 miles – so we will explore that tomorrow.

Our site – notice the hill in the background.

There are many deer throughout the campground and they are very use to people. It was nice just to sit and watch them come thru our site.

And another great campfire night! The sun set tonight at 9:30 and it was still light after 10!
