May 29, 2007 – Travel to Montana

Today’s travels took us thru rolling hills – from grassland to farmland and back again. We made a stop in Williston, ND to fill up on propane ($1.50/gallon – Nice), and fuel ($3.49/gallon – Not too Nice) and groceries (Wal-Mart). We have been in ND for 5 days and have found that many of these small towns do not have a grocery store – just a convenience stop at the gas stations. It is a real trek for many to visit the larger stores to go shopping.

As we entered Montana, the landscape changed to wide valleys with smaller hills. This is truly Big Sky Country!

We were able to see for miles and miles: ranches, farms, trains, oil rigs, large granaries, horses, cattle, antelope, deer, and wildflowers all over the prairie. In many areas, the cattle were open range (we were careful).

There were storms coming thru but we were lucky enough to have only slight rain. Take a look at these clouds:

We stopped in Culbertson for Montana information and met this wonderful little lady who took us thru their museum. Fascinating place with theme rooms from life on the prairies (1800 – 2000).

Our travels today ended at the Rancho Campground in Wolf Creek, MT (Fort Peck Indian Reservation). Our fellow campers were a couple from Iowa who are on their way to Alaska – first time for them also.

Miles Traveled: 230
Routes Traveled:
North Dakota: US-85, US-2
