November 13-19, 2012 Delaware Seashore – Part 1

We left the DC area and headed east over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge:

Crowded, isn’t it – LOL.  Actually this picture was taken on our last day there – we did have a few more people camped with us, including my brother IL and sister IL.

The bridge that you see in the background is lit by blue lights at night – Beautiful!

This area was closed by Hurricane Sandy  - the old road was torn apart by the tidal surge plus the beach was seriously eroded.  The new bridge and road were good once cleaned of all the debris and sand.  This immediate area did okay – wind damage, beach erosion, power losses but no serious loss of property nor life – :-)).  Further south, however did have some major damage.

They were working on building up the beach dunes again while we were there.  On two of the days there were high tide warnings – we were high enough but it was a concern watching how close the water came to the highway in the areas that did not have those dunes.

Rough seas:

If you look to the left under the bridge, you can still see some of the debris:

Aren’t these interesting?  “Built from 1939 to 1942, the 11 concrete observation towers along Delaware’s coast were built to protect the shores during World War II.  The towers were the eyes for the guns of Fort Miles located in what is now Cape Henlopen State Park”
