We started the day with running a few errands, passed the sign for Freedom Rock in Muscatine County and had to go see it.
In 2007 and in 2013 we visited the original rock near Menlo, Iowa. Since then, Ray “Bubba” Sorensen is doing a rock in every county in Iowa. So we just had to go see it!
This is the Muscatine County Freedom Rock in Wilton, Iowa
Each of the painted sides is dedicated to someone from the county. Below each picture is the narrative of that picture.
If you look closely, each of the bricks is a memorial brick.
This is another wonderful site. Humbling!
In 2007, this is how I described the original site and I can still feel it at this site:
“There are no words to describe this place.
It is an emotional experience to stand at the rock. It is an emotional experience to read the notes left for the artist. We thank God for all the freedoms we have and we thank all our servicemen for defending those freedoms.”
If you ever get to this part of the country, I recommend visiting at least one of the rocks. The original rock had a book where folks left their thoughts and memories of their loved ones – that was very emotional.
Some day, I would love to visit as many as I can.. a themed road trip.

Wilton is a cute little town but it was empty of people.. kind of eerie. We did find these amazing murals:
Cool grasses on our way out of town:
From there we headed to the Truck Museum – that will be part 2.
