Road trip day –
We packed our lunch, picked up our mail at the post office and away we went south on Route 60 to the Salt River Canyon.
South of Show Low, Route 60 passes through part of the Sitgraves National Forest into the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation.
The Salt River Canyon is also known as the “mini Grand Canyon” or Arizona’s other canyon. The road drops 2000’ feet into the canyon and then climbs back 2000’ to the Mogollon. All this happens within a nine mile stretch.
So imagine driving thru forests and then they open up to this canyon. One of the first views:
The road down:
The views continued to be awesome at every stop:
The bridge that crosses the river – notice the curvy road on each side of the bridge:
The Salt River – there are roads that go down to the river and also thru the canyon but we need a permit to travel them. Maybe next time.
This was the Visitor Center and Rest Area – now closed – how sad :
More views along the way – notice the highway:
Doesn’t this just look like the Grand Canyon:
We ate lunch at this viewpoint and then took a slow ride back to Show Low:
Another great road trip!
We did more exploring back in Show Low with a final stop at the local Moose Lodge – always a good time.
Enjoy today!
