May 8-9, 2009 Creamer’s Field

On Friday morning we left Delta Junction and traveled to Fairbanks. First the stats:

Miles Traveled: 96 miles

Routes Traveled:

AK: AK-2

The rivers were so much different from a week ago – most were flowing although higher and most of the ice was gone:

We arrived at Creamer’s Field around lunch time and settled in. We met a number of people who will be training us and who we will be working with – everyone is great! At 4, we meet with Alexis who trained us in the things we need to know about the visitor center and museum. We will find out next week on the outside work that needs to be done.

This is such a neat place and can’t wait to learn all about it (and will be passing on some to you – :-))) Here is a link: http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=refuge.creamers

You can also Google it – lots of info out there – :-)

We look out over some of the fields – how wonderful! The building in the picture is the old bunkhouse – now used for storage.

This is a picture from the driveway - of the barn and house (on the left by the tree). The visitor center and museum are in the house:

There are a number of trails throughout the property so we checked out some of them on Saturday. The visitor center was open from 12-4 so I met with the volunteers to go over opening and closing. Tomorrow I will pick up the volunteer books that will give us more detail on the visitor center and the museum so we can be prepared to answer questions.

Although the refuge is open 24 hours, the visitor center was only open on Saturdays from 12-4 thru the winter. Next Saturday starts the summer hours and we will work Sat/Sun from 10-6 and Monday from 10-5. There are other volunteers who will work Tuesday – Friday so hopefully we will have some time for sightseeing.

We did get a chance today (Sat) to take a ride around and check out the locations of stores, post office, gas stations, propane suppliers, some attractions, restaurants, the Legion, and the Elks (as well as bead stores – :-))) and orient ourselves on how to get around.

The weather has been cooler and more windy than normal and I am hoping it gets warmer next week – :-))) And folks, we are gaining 7 minutes of daylight a day – right now we are over 17.5 hours of daylight. And it really doesn’t get dark – more like a twilight. We are just getting use to going to bed with the sun still shining. What is interesting is that when I wake up in the middle of the night, I have to check more than one clock to make sure of the time – LOL!

I will leave you with more pictures of Creamer’s Field:
