May 24, 2013 - Dixie National Forest

The Dixie National Forest surrounds Bryce Canyon National Park. It is Utah’s largest forest and it extends 170 miles east to west.  So today we decided to stop at the Red Canyon Visitor Center (one of the National Forest Visitor Centers) to get information on campgrounds, dispersed camping, forest roads, hiking, and gathering wood.  This area has been called the “most photographed place in Utah” because of its brilliant red soil contrasted with the green pines.

We had a great chat with the ranger who told us where we might find “down and dead” firewood that was free to take and use for campfires.  So off we went - check out the snow on the mountain:

The soil was really red:

Beautiful scenery:

There are some easy hikes in this area to see the arches so we may check it out later.

Meadows:

Huge washes - cannot imagine what it is like during monsoon season. (The wash is on the left side of the road in this picture.  It almost looks like a dirt road.)

So did we find any firewood?  Nope, it was picked clean, oh well.

We headed back to Route 12 and stopped at the tunnels:

Pretty cool, isn’t it!

We had lunch at Bryce Canyon Pines Restaurant - famous for their soup and pies.  Well, we did not have the soup but the sandwiches were outstanding.  We would have LOVED to have desert but decided it was not in our best interests - Smile.

We then stopped at Ruby’s General Store for a few items and back home.

Another great day in Utah.

Enjoy today.
