December 31, 2008 – Traveling to New Mexico

We continued our travels through north western Texas into New Mexico. The land continues to be somewhat flat and desert like. We are seeing a lot more cactus, palm like trees and small scrub bushes. And a lot of these:
Yes, this is oil country.

We crossed over into Mountain Time and arrived at “The Ranch”, an Escapees Co-op Park. What was really cool was that when we arrived they rang the bell outside and a number of people came to greet us. (Elliot even got some treats.) They also have Happy Hour at 4 PM and we had to get up and introduce ourselves. For those people that are leaving the next day, everyone sings “Happy Trails” – isn’t that neat!

We met quite a few people who lease lots here and found out a lot of information. One of things Andy and I have decided to do this trip is to find a lot somewhere in the southwest where we can winter every year. And if we can’t find one, we are checking out places where we can roost cheaply for a few months. (Or even month to month, change of scenery.) The weather here is great, nights are cool and days are warm and they get over 300 sunny days a year – Yippee!!!

The Ranch sits between Carlsbad (20 miles south) and Artesia (18 miles north). Both places are growing and have all the stores. So this afternoon, we took a quick trip to Wal-Mart in Artesia – nice little town.

This evening, we are just taking it easy. There is a New Year’s Eve party at the clubhouse but I don’t think we will even make 10 PM.

Happy New Year!
